It is a way of invalidating the cache and clear it from the Edge location before its expiration time. It allows you to push the most recent version of static files which helps during deployments.
However, when you invalidate the cache, it does not mean automatically, that the user will see the recent files as they might be cached in a browser. For that reason, you should use hashes and timestamps in your file names.
